The Eco-City Action Plan for Sangli - Miraj - Kupwad (SMK) is an initiative by Hon. Cabinet Minister of Rural Development, Mr. Jayantrao Patil. Valuable contribution and active support were provided by Mr. D. P. Metake-Deshmukh, Commissioner, Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation (SMKMC),Prof. Nitin Sawgave, Mayor, Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad (SMK) and Mr. Srinivas Patil, ex-Corporator, SMKMC.

The main focus of this project is to achieve sustainable development by integrating environmental, social and economic considerations.

Environmental Management Centre was contracted to prepare the Eco-City Action Plan.This website was developed to further the process of stakeholder consultation, engage with the general public in the cities, share information and act as a platform for interaction among concerned parties. The website also used the application of Ekovoices which helped citizens identify areas of concern as well initiatives already taken.

The report was submitted to the SMKMC on 30th November 2010 and the project has now come to a close.


Summary of the Eco-City Action Plan

The Eco-City Program has been envisaged in two distinct phases - 'Planning' and 'Implementation'. The Eco-City Action Plan is the product of the first phase.

The EMS and participatory approach have been adopted and modified to develop a unique hybrid process to prepare the Action Plan. It involves identification of key stakeholders, opening dialogue between different stakeholders and evolving an environmental policy in the form of a Charter.

Situation analysis has been conducted. Ten themes have been identified to address the environmental concerns within the region. Actions in the form of projects, programs, plans and policies have been evolved to address the gaps and opportunities within each theme. The framework to evolve actions accounted for the goals set in the Charter. Key elements of the project cycle have been considered for each action.
